Bone ingrowth and biological fixation of selective laser melted porous scaffolds for the reconstruction of severe bone defects. Jan Demol, Ana Soares, Bram Lenaerts, Steven Leuridan, Sebastian De Boodt, Hendrik Delport.

  • Selective laser melted porous scaffolds have good osseointegration characteristics. The in vivo goat model showed increasing bone apposition on and ingrowth in the scaffolds, resulting in a strong fixation with the surrounding bone.
  • The osseointegration might be accelerated with an HA coating, however overall bone ingrowth does not seem to be influenced significantly.
  • Combined with a thorough 3D pre-operative planning, this methodology provides a promising approach to the reconstruction of severe bone defects in a patient-specific manner
